Former Conservative candidate for Harpenden and Berkhamstead in the General Election, Nigel Gardner, was outspoken against the expansion during his campaign.
He said: “This battle is not over. It is absolutely right to appeal the judgement.
“The Supreme Court has made crystal clear that big infrastructure projects must have proper environmental assessments. This has simply not happened in this case. The developers have used Mickey Mouse analysis, often without real numbers.
“If we let this go, and stop fighting, future generations will not understand our shortsightedness. Appeals are expensive. My plea is – open your wallets, donate to the wonderful people at LADACAN.”

Parliamentary candidate for the Harpenden seat, Nigel Gardner, said he believed common sense local conservatism was the middle way: “‘Neither chaotic Keir Starmer – not knowing which tax he will put up each week. Nor knee jerk populism – that offers no solutions in our wonderful corner of Hertfordshire. “For me, the Conservative way is to allow people to get on with their lives with minimum interference. Low and simple taxes, sound money, efficient and accountable public services. And above all – courtesy and respect for others and their points of view.”

Nigel Gardner said: “I have known this piece of countryside for over 50 years. If the council think it is grey, they must be colour-blind. Before the bypass was built it was completely open. But it still provides gorgeous views across rolling countryside. There is nothing grey about it at all. It is a treasure to behold on both a cold winter morning and a balmy summer evening.”

“We went to show our support for local democratic politicians in Turkey at this extremely difficult moment for them,” said Nigel Gardner. “However much we argue and disagree locally about parking or whatever in St Albans and Harpenden, we are free to voice our views without fear. It was humbling to hear from Fethiye’s Mayor Alim Karaca about the daily anxiety he and his family face about arrest without a fair trial.”
